A mud pump is a mechanical device that delivers flushing fluids such as mud or water into boreholes during drilling operations. It serves as a critical component of drilling equipment.

In conventional direct-circulation drilling, the pump pressurizes surface flushing media—clean water, mud, or polymer flushing fluid—and delivers them directly to the drill bit bottom through high-pressure hoses, water swivels, and drill string bores. This process cools the drill bit, removes cut rock debris, and transports the debris to the surface.

Common mud pumps adopt piston or plunger structures. Driven by a prime mover, the crankshaft rotates and drives pistons or plungers to perform reciprocating motion inside pump cylinders via crossheads. Alternating opening and closing of suction and discharge valves enable pressurized delivery and circulation of flushing fluids.

Classification by Cylinder Number

Based on cylinder quantity, mud pumps are available in single-cylinder, double-cylinder, triple-cylinder, five-cylinder, and other configurations.

Performance Parameters

Displacement and pressure are the two core performance parameters of mud pumps.

Displacement

Displacement is measured in liters per minute. It correlates with borehole diameter and the required upward return velocity of flushing fluid from the hole bottom—larger boreholes demand higher displacement. The upward return velocity must timely flush rock cuttings and powder away from the hole bottom and efficiently convey them to the surface. For geological core drilling, the typical upward return velocity ranges from 0.4 to 1.0 meters per minute.

Pressure

Pump pressure depends on borehole depth, pipeline resistance of flushing fluid passages, and properties of delivered flushing fluids. Deeper boreholes and higher pipeline resistance require greater pressure.

Displacement needs real-time adjustment as borehole diameter and depth change. Pumps are equipped with gearboxes or hydraulic motors to regulate rotational speed and adjust displacement. Flow meters and pressure gauges are installed to monitor operational status accurately. Drilling personnel can identify downhole conditions via pressure variations to prevent underground accidents.

Pre-Operation Inspection & Maintenance Guidelines

Before startup: Check inlet/outlet pipelines for blockages, inject grease into front/rear bearings, and verify full packing installation. During operation: Equip a high-pressure clean water pump to deliver water with higher pressure than the mud pump to lubricate and protect anti-leak packing. Never shut down the flushing pump during operation to avoid severe sealing wear.

The clearance between impellers and guard plates significantly impacts service life. Improper clearance causes vibration, noise, and rapid wear of flow-pass components. When replacing impellers, adjust clearance to meet design specifications via adjusting screws on rear bearing housings. The allowable suction head is calibrated with clean water; suction capacity reduction must be considered when pumping mud.
